Evaluation

During my photography assignment, I think it went extremely well, due to the fact I was working with really good people, who kept time well and were there for the times of the photo shoots. I was fortunate enough to be paired with two of the fashion students who were extremely reliable when it comes to replying to emails and being punctual. As well as this, both of the students knew exactly what they wanted photograph wise making my pre-production into looking into photography ideas for the shoots extremely easy. I think that the fact I had two reliable people who were able to give me a fairly specific brief into what they wanted, really helped me get the shots they wanted of their clothes. By the end of the shoot’s and showing them their photographs both of the students were extremely happy with what I had given them, making the entire shooting experience enjoyable for both parties with an outcome we were all proud of.

In post-production when I was editing the shots into a magazine layout I ran into a fair few snags, mainly with me overcomplicating things and not keeping them contemporary like in many fashion magazines today. However after some further research looking at magazines such as Finch and V magazine on the website ‘Issuu’, I was able to keep things a lot simpler, focusing purely on the images and the clothes that were being presented, with the messages they wanted to convey. I am extremely happy with my final layouts, as they both have consistency within themselves, and also show some extremely strong shots that work well showing off the clothes.

Elaine Constantine

Elaine Constantine is a British born Photographer who specialises in fashion and the youth culture of today. Her images are always upbeat and colourful with a very summery feel about them, showing Youths having fun and just being young with friends. Constantine has worked for fashion magazines such as ‘The Face’ which is a British music and fashion magazine, founded in the 80’s. She really shows the culture of today in what she photographs, showing young people just having fun in a colourful environment.

Unlike the more classic fashion photography of Irving Penn, Constantine takes a completely different angle using natural lighting on location, instead of artificial lighting in the studio. I think the image above really shows her style of photography as it looks fun, the clothing is in clear view, and the subjects are in a natural setting. You can tell by the way that the shot it lit that there has been only natural lighting used, i.e. The Sun. as it is prominently lit from one side, with shadows spread in one constant direction. What makes this different from classic fashion photography is that instead of making the clothes the single subject, the picture as a whole contributes to both advertising and the clothes themselves. As set in a summer setting of what looks like a lake, you can tell that the clothes are intended for summer wear, and the way that the models are posed, jumping around, I think shows their durability in this kind of weather. From this photograph you can tell that the intended audience is young people, possibly university students, that just want to hang around with friends and enjoy the summer weather, and this adds to the effectiveness of the shot.

Irving Penn

Irving Penn’s photography was thought of being revolutionary in its day, with fresh ideas to bring to the world of fashion photography. He was one of the top in his field and took photographs for top fashion magazines, such as Vogue Magazine, and then founding his own studio in 1953. A lot of the work he did in his time went unappreciated until more modern times, showing how ahead of the photographic world he really was.

I think this is an extremely good fashion photograph as it shows the subjects dress in full, with the hat and dress being the entire focus of it. This is important in fashion photography as in this field the subject is never the model themselves, but the clothes they are wearing. You can also see that in this photograph the lighting is focused, not on the face of the model, but her dress, and hat bringing them forward making them the first things you notice about it. The way she is posed is also important in the photograph as the way she is composed shows the audience intended for the outfit. You can see she is posed quite elegantly showing that maybe the outfit is purely for modelling purposes, or for a more upper class society. As a fashion photograph I think this works extremely well as it highlights the important parts of the dress, such as the texture and fabric, also modelling it for its intended audience.

This photograph isn’t so much an example of Penn’s fashion photography, but more an example of his photographic expertise and ability to think ahead of the game with a revolutionary style. Just by using two walls converging in a corner, Penn turned what could have been an ordinary studio photo shoot into something new that hadn’t been done before. I think this new way of thinking and not adhering to the norm would be a brilliant way to show off and express my clients needs in the brief they have given me with their designs.

Fashion Photography

Fashion Photography is a discipline of photography designed to show the Clothing and fashion items in a stylistic way to make them appealing to the consumer.

Fashion Photography can be done either in the studio or on location, for most straight edge shoots, such as something for Ben Sherman, the preference may be studio for the way it portrays the models as serious individuals. However in some circumstances it may work well in a studio but using props to bring the outfit alive and to add a sophisticated flare

The art of Fashion Photography is one that doesn’t have to be done solely in a studio, and I believe given the right inspiration, can be much more effective done on location. For example this Mountain Biking shoot is for a competition to win some protective armor, so it makes sense to do this outside where you would usually be cycling. However I believe that even a shoot for Ben Sherman could be effectively done in a forest to not only show the sophistication of the clothes but to give an outdoorsman feel to them.
